Sometimes things don’t go our way and we may find ourselves feeling low, stressed or disheartened. But what we need to understand is that not feeling good and continuing to feel bad or low does not solve our problems. Infact negative feelings only block our ability to think and take appropriate action. It is important to take charge of our feelings and consciously try to feel better so that we stay in charge of what is happening and don’t cause any further damage to the situation.
Use any of the below techniques to quickly find your way out of a bad mood. All they will take is a minute, but the results will stay with you all through your day and even life especially when you remember to do them consistently. Ready? Let’s go….
1. Start Clapping: You might have clapped your hands several times in the past in appreciation, on hearing a good news or when cheering for and congratulating someone. but after reading some of its benefits mentioned below, you are sure to make it a habit!
Our body is a miraculous system comprising of a multitude of functioning parts coming together for us to live healthy lives. The palms in particular contain specific nerve and blood vessels which when stimulated through the action of clapping help in refreshing the mind and relaxing the body. Whenever you are feeling low or anxious, join your palms together and start clapping for a minute. It will instantly work as a powerful mental and physical stimulant, and activate the energy various centers in your body, leaving you feeling much better within few seconds. Even during the times of worship, devotional and group bhajan singing are usually accompanied by people clapping their hands together. Do you know why? It is thought to create a positive environment uplifting one’s energy and vibration. So from today, we don’t have to think much, let’s just clap our way to happiness and peace.
2. Go on a Gratitude Spree: Gratitude is an appreciation or positive recall for what one has experienced or received, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, we activate the happy memories button in our minds. In the process of doling so, we actually start to recognize that the source of all happiness and goodness lies within our own minds and hearts.
Being grateful helps us connect to the Higher Self or Universal energy within us. This connection is especially helpful when one is feeling sad or lost as it helps us regain our passion and spirit for life. In positive psychology research studies too, gratitude is strongly associated with greater happiness and health. There is no doubt and you can verify this with your own practice that, Gratitude helps us feel more positive, lifting our mood and improving the quality of our thoughts.
Here’s a great way to practice gratitude to cheer yourself up quickly. Take a minute to write down all the memorable moments you have experienced and the wonderful gifts and blessings you have received in your life so far. Start each sentence with, “ I am so grateful for ………….” By the time a minute ends, you will have a smile on your face and you will feel much better than before.
3. Shift your thoughts with Positive words: The power of just a few seconds to a minute of repeating positive affirmations should not be underestimated. After all words are energy. They can quickly shift your thoughts and lift your mood. Because Words carry creative power. Every word has a picture that the brain begins to form as you speak it.
Positive affirmations are a proven technique to improve your mood, reduce stress, and boost your confidence. The trick is that your subconscious tends to believe what you repeatedly tell it. This is why people with a negative outlook tend to end up affirming their negative thoughts so often as the truth of their life that it finally brings their greatest fears to life. Thankfully, the reverse is also true, and positive affirmations can be used to break free from the negative cycle of past disappointments and negative associations. They can help convince your deeper mind (Subconscious mind) that the positive things you tell yourself really are true.
Here’s how to use positive words whenever you are feeling low. Whatever has hurt or disappointed you, counter it by creating statements that are opposite to the negative thoughts running in your mind. Create positive affirmations that will uplift and inspire you and spend a minute repeating them to yourself with a Smile on your face.
