5 Ways to Cope with feeling Overwhelmed

Feeling overwhelmed because of too many things you have to get done is mentally and physically exhausting. It drains your energy and makes it more difficult for you to achieve your goals and solve your problems. It can negatively impact your enthusiasm and drive for getting things done.

If you find yourself frequently feeling overwhelmed, it’s time for you to take action and do something about it. After all, your happiness and wellbeing could be at stake too!

Here are 5 things you can do to tackle this problem.

1. Identify the causes

Slow down, Pause for a moment. Ask yourself why you are feeling so overwhelmed? What could be the tasks or responsibilities that are causing you to get anxious and feel so unsettled.?

It’s best to take a pen and paper and try to answer the above questions honestly. You will probably notice a few things immediately coming to your mind. Identify the top one or two things out of these that need to be dealt with immediately and which if completed could lower your stress levels by over 90 %. Write down the thoughts and answers you are getting so that you get them out of your head, onto a piece of paper where you can start the process of resolving them. Writing helps you to view your thoughts in a more clear, organized and structured manner. As you get clearer, you tend to act with more proactiveness and power helping you feel more in control of your circumstances and results.

2. Prioritize your tasks

Feeling stressed or burdened often coms up when you feel like you have too much to do in a short period of time. A powerful way to deal with this feeling would be to create a list of activities and action steps that are most necessary to fulfil the urgent tasks. Still better, make this list daily so you are clear on what needs to be done for the day. Making a list of most necessary tasks will allow you to stay focused on completing them instead of randomly taking up something that could have easily been pushed to be done later.

Keep this list with you all through the day and mark those tasks as complete one by one as you finish them.

3. Keep distractions away

Identify the things that take your focus away or distract you, affecting the timely completion of your tasks. They are an unnecessary waste of your time and energy that could be better spent doing something else. Not only do they delay completion of important tasks, they also leave you feeling guilty about not doing what’s necessary, which further lowers your productivity and results.

These distractions could include: mindless scrolling on phone, social media, television, chatting away with someone during your work hours, getting into petty arguments etc. When you become conscious of not wasting your time and energy on tasks that drain you, you start to get more done in less time and also not feel stressed while you are doing them. Staying disciplined and doing something that you are supposed to do in the stipulated time that you have allocated to it makes you feel empowered from within. You approach your tasks with more clarity, enthusiasm and power.

4. Learn how to Delegate

Think about this for a moment. Are you currently doing something that can be done by someone else? If you identify what can be delegated you may have more time for something else that is important.  A lot of us like to be perfectionists. We want to do everything by ourselves because we feel no one can do it better. While it’s good to be passionate about what you do and to trust yourself to get things done, However if you look at successful people and organizations, they all have teams who share responsibilities and bring their own expertise and skills that further add value to what they do and achieve together.

Be open to giving responsibility to others. List every task that can be done by someone else and delegate them as much as possible one thing at a time so you can free some of your time for things that are most necessary or important to not only your productivity but also your Well-being.

5. Practice Mindful breathing

Silent Sitting is another powerful practice to stop feeling overwhelmed as it helps induce relaxation response and brings your emotions into balance. It’s a process of just being with yourself, connecting with your own body, sensations and breath, observing your thoughts and getting ready to release the thoughts and feelings that are causing you to feel stressed. Incorporate 15 minutes of silent sitting into your daily routine. These 15 minutes of breathing focused awareness will calm your mind and soothe your heart. It will leave you with more confidence in yourself to handle things in a better manner. You will be able to think clearly and make smart decisions that to attract the results you want faster.

Special tip

Whenever you find yourself getting stressed or anxious, close your eyes and take a few moments to slowly breathe in and out. Allow yourself to focus fully on the inhalation and exhalation of your breath. Then from your breath, go to your body. Observe the sensations inside your body and mentally give yourself the command to “Relax.” Repeat this practice every few hours in the day until you feel more more peaceful and in control.
