Are you having trouble overcoming procrastination? Is there something in your life that you have been postponing? You may have been “planning” to do something for very long, but not actually doing anything to start that big project or task you want to do. And this may have now become a habit.
Whether it’s the task of cleaning up your home, organizing your files, starting your own business or taking a major life decision, you need to find a way to boost your motivation levels and move from simply thinking about doing something to actually acting on it.
Here are some tips you can use for overcoming Procrastination and accomplishing your tasks successfully
1. Become more Aware of your thoughts
Pay attention to the times when thoughts of procrastination start to enter your mind. If you find yourself thinking thoughts like, “I don’t feel like doing this now” or “I will work on this later,” then recognize that you are about to procrastinate and immediately practice this technique to not give in to the urge – Take a few deep breaths and remind yourself why it is important for you to complete this task now. Then try to convince & push yourself to just execute this task for the next 5 minutes. In most cases, by then the urge to procrastinate would have gone. You will notice you end up continuing to do the task. Do this consistently for better results.
2. Deal with your Fears
Fear is major factor that contributes to procrastination. We could have a fear of failure, a fear of making mistakes, or even a fear of success. Dealing with fear is about challenging our belief systems. Identify what thoughts usually come to your mind that cause you to postpone or procrastinate. Sit in Silence, listen to your thoughts and identify your feelings. Jot them all down. Now go to each one of them and ask yourself if this thought is adding value to your life. If the answer is no, then replace the thought with a more desirable one. For example, replace the thought, “I can’t handle my Job well” with “I am capable and smart”. By addressing these thoughts that are keeping you from getting started or pulling you down, you can begin to overcome your procrastination habit. Continue this practice until you completely overcome procrastinating.
3. Take Small Steps
Sometimes you may procrastinate because you don’t know or really understand where to begin. The entire task may make you feel pressured or overwhelmed. As a result, you may consciously or unconsciously delay or postpone doing it. A simple solution to this would be to start breaking down big tasks into small action steps. When you focus on completing these small steps, it will seem much more attainable for your mind to tackle one thing at a time and thus you will comfortably take gradual steps and make smooth progress towards your big goal.
4. Create an Action Plan
Schedule your action steps for overcoming procrastination and completing your tasks. Once you have figured out what steps you need to take, go to your calendar and schedule your time to work on completing them. Write the activities in your schedule along with what time you intend to do them during the day. Calendarizing your tasks in this manner allows your brain to stay more organized and alert which will ultimately help you become more productive.
5. Forgive Yourself
You may have made many mistakes in the past, but it’s important to Forgive yourself for the mistakes and errors made. Blaming yourself over and over again only strengthens the feelings of Guilt. Remind yourself, holding on to the past prevents you from moving forward and learning valuable life lessons. To live ,ore mindfully and peacefully, say to yourself, “ I forgive and love myself.” Studies show that Self-forgiveness can help you feel more positive about yourself and reduce your chances of procrastination in the future.
