We may all face challenges at some point or the other in our lives. but it is our attitude and responses to these challenges that determine how quickly we overcome them. There are typically two types of views and attitudes people have towards challenges — either they are optimistic or they are pessimistic.
While we may all have a natural tendency to have one view or the other, our ability to be optimistic in life, especially when challenges arise will positively impact our overall success and results in life.
Along with physical health, our mental health is also equally important as it impacts the way we see and do everything in our life. Several studies show that people who are optimistic are physically and mentally healthier. Optimism creates energy that allows us to enjoy greater wellbeing, leading to higher productivity and accomplishments.
Here are few tips that can help with developing a Positive state of mind and Optimistic attitude in life.
1. Remove Negative Influences
Observe what kind of impact does a task or activity bring into your life. For many people, this can include watching the news, spending time on social media, listening to depressing music or talks that are not uplifting, spending time in a negative environment with people who complain and so on. Notice how you feel when you do these and other things that are part of your daily or weekly routine. If you feel overburdened, negative, stressed, angry, unworthy or any other negative emotion, then it is a sign to replace these activities with ones that leave you feeling more positive.
Surround yourself with pleasant, uplifting, and nurturing things. Decorate your home with happy pictures and positive reminders. Spend time with people who are happy, cheerful and inspiring. Listen to music with positive lyrics. Fill your time with productive activities, be creative, learn new skills and help others. You will create more positive energy that brings positive experiences in your life.
2. Control Your Responses
There are a few basic differences in the reactions of optimists and pessimists. An optimist sees failure as temporary, while the pessimist sees it as permanent. An optimist sees unfortunate events as part of his growth and learning journey, A pessimist, on the other hand, sees negative situations as threats and indication to what lies ahead of him. An optimist looks to adapt to the changing situation quickly by finding out solutions, a pessimist stays stuck to the problem with the thought that World has been unfair to him. Thus as we can see, an optimist will find his way through a problem and achieve even greater success for he is willing to use his mind and energy to take charge of his life.
When you find yourself in a difficult or disappointing situation, take a moment to really reflect on the challenge before you react or respond to it. “Ask yourself, what can I do to resolve or overcome this?” When you ask this empowering question, Your subconscious mind will begin to look for answers and you will be guided to do what is needed at that point in time. Energy flows where attention goes. If your focus is on finding solutions, you will attract solutions.
This question will also make you feel like you are in control to do something for yourself. It will help you develop an optimistic outlook and shift your thinking towards opportunities and improvements that can be made for your good.
3. Practice Gratitude
Writing daily what you are grateful for can help you focus on the positive things that are happening in your life. Feeling grateful makes you a happier and more optimistic person. Research studies involving people keeping gratitude journals show that they feel better about their lives and suffer less from depression and anxiety.
Boost your positive thinking by making it a habit to write down 10 things you are grateful for each day. You will stay more motivated to pursue your tasks and even see your perspective change as you focus on the positive aspects of your life. Why wait another day? Start today! Gratitude will take you from lack mentality to abundant mentality.
4. Take time out for yourself
It is important to take a break from your daily responsibilities and duties. Overworking yourself leads to fatigue and low energy. It can impact your health and even lead to a negative attitude as you get too entangled in stress and performance pressure, making it harder for you to be optimistic and positive.
Schedule some time in your day to do things that refresh you. Take a walk, play some sport, do yoga, read a good book, write your thoughts, feelings or ideas down on paper or do something else that interests you and helps you unwind. Most importantly, take some quiet time out for yourself in the day. Time spent in silence can help you to reflect, de-stress, and gain fresh perspective on things. It can help you relax and recharge yourself.
Giving yourself personal time on a regular basis leads to greater optimism and happiness.
5. Forgive the past
If you keep thinking and talking about the unpleasant past that you may have experienced, you will only make its influence stronger in your life today. Past has already gone. But if we continue to dwell on it, we will stay stuck in negative emotions and thoughts. This leads to pessimistic thinking and affects the choices and decisions we make today.
We all make mistakes. Just as having problems to solve is a natural part of progressing through life, so is accepting and learning from the past a natural path to growth and success in life. Forgive yourself and others by daily repeating, “I Forgive everything and everyone”. Put your best foot forward in whatever you do. No matter what your past has been like, tell yourself, ‘everything will work out well for me’. When you hold good thoughts, everything eventually will work out in your favour.
6. Serve Others
It is said, Serving others is the best universal tool for understanding, experiencing and expressing the Divine Principle of Love present in each one of us. Service is love in action. Such service that keeps in mind the needs and the good of the recipient not only uplifts the recipient but also positively impacts the one who offers the service.
When you are trying to help someone, you automatically get into a positive state of mind while also helping the other person feel good and optimistic about life. As you help and encourage others, you will naturally cultivate more optimism in yourself. Giving your time, energy and resources to help someone can make you feel more grateful for your life and even improve your confidence and sense of worthiness. The positive energy you share with others will spill over into your own life, creating more positivity within and around you.
