Creativity is a useful skill for people from all walks of life. It allows you to expand your thinking, and come up with ideas that help you to adapt to different situations and even helps resolve problems by coming up with appropriate and timely solutions.
However, Creativity is not a skill limited to only a few lucky people who you term as rare or gifted. It is an ability that we all possess but need to channelize or boost for it to flow through us naturally. Most recent research studies on Creative thinking suggest that Creativity is like muscle that can be built and strengthened and with Practice.
Try these tips to boost your Creative thinking and gain more Success in everything you do:
1. Walk daily
Walking encourages cerebral blood flow which boosts creative thinking. Research from Stanford University has revealed that Creativity was boosted by over 50 percent by walking rather than simply sitting while brainstorming for ideas. This should be no surprise, for a physical activity like walking does generally leave us feeling more energetic. Mindfulness studies also claim Walking helps with increased sense of awareness and alertness which is the foundation for Creative thinking.
Here’s what you can do – Commit to Walking daily for atleast 30 minutes. These would be precious 30 minutes when you would be away from all your devices and gadgets like your phone and laptop except one – which is the most powerful device and mechanism in the world and that is your “Mind”. When your body engages in a physical activity like walking, your mind becomes relaxed, open and receptive for ideas and inspiration. You will notice sometimes an idea or solution to something you have been struggling with for days suddenly comes out of no-where, effortlessly and spontaneously.
2. Improve your Sleep quality
Nothing shuts down creativity faster than a sleepless night and a restless mind. Though most people are of the opinion 7 to 8 hours of sleep is sufficient, the right indicator of whether or not you are getting adequate rest is by determining if you are able to wake up easily without an alarm at the time you are supposed to in the morning and if you are feeling refreshed and energetic as you wake up.
Few things that can help with restful sleep and peaceful mind-
-Finish your last meal atleast three hours before bedtime.
-Maintain a regular sleep and wake up schedule
-Stay away from gadgets for an one hour before you sleep
-Listen to some calming and relaxing music
All this can greatly increase the quality of your sleep and help you be more open to the flow of new ideas in your mind and brain.
3. Jot down ideas
It is not new to have heard people saying that they got this big idea that changed their life when they were sitting in meditation, taking a walk or even showering or bathing. Ideas can come anytime. You may even wake up with a thought or solution to something that has been running in your mind for a while. What is important to optimize Creative thinking is to not run down your own thoughts or label your ideas as silly, unreasonable or impossible.
To boost creativity, be open enough to allow the flow of ideas to come to you in a non critical, non judgmental manner. You can reason things out later when you look at these ideas more deeply and think of which ones can be suitably applied to your life and circumstances. But fist allow the ideas to flow. Whatever ideas come to your mind, write them down in your diary and go over them later during the day to see how they can better what you are currently doing.
4. Ask the question and sleep
During the dream state, the subconscious mind actively works to solve problems that the conscious mind has not yet figured out solutions or answers for. Many successful people have stumbled upon Creative solutions, ideas, and inspiration in their dream state. It is thus understood that people who may not consider themselves Creative can also access their imaginative nature via dreams. When you ask a question or sleep with a specific thought in your mind, your subconscious mind tries to engage with it at night all the time while you are asleep and feels obligated to resolve it for you. Chances are you may wake up with a dream, feeling, thought, picture or an inner voice to guide you towards your desired success.
Here’s how you can put this into Practice – Ask a question that you wish to receive ideas or inspiration for. Repeat it 3 to 4 times at bedtime as the last thing you repeat before you sleep. When you wake up in the morning, sit in Silence for few minutes to stay open to any sign, idea or messages that your deeper mind wants to convey to you regarding your question.
5. Use Positive words
Positive Words can help you boost your flow of creativity. Daily repetition of positive affirmations will boost your self esteem and self confidence. It will help build a more positive image of yourself as a creative person and unlock your inner stream of ideas. You will stay in a more positive frame of mind and vibration that will allow your Creative instincts to flow more effortlessly.
Repeat the following affirmations to yourself every morning.
I am a Creative person
I appreciate the flow of Creativity in my life
Every day, creative energy runs through me
My mind joyfully cooperates with me to give me Creative ideas and solutions
I think Positively and Creatively
My mind brings me ideas and solutions that adds value to everything I do.
