Today we are well aware that the food that we eat plays a major role in determining our overall health and wellbeing. We must thus eat healthy foods that give us the right amount of energy and nutrition. But did you know, according to a research conducted by the University of Alabama, it is not just about eating the right food, but it is also about adopting the right food habits that will help in maintaining good mental and physical health.
Let’s look at some food habits that will help you stay happy and healthy
1. Eat when you are hungry
Eating when you feel hungry and stopping once you are full is the greatest way to keep your stomach and digestion healthy. It involves eating intuitively by listening to your body. It is about trusting your body and its intelligence to make good choices around foods.
Many people say that they are not able to pick up signals from their body as to when to eat and how much to eat. This could be because they are preoccupied or distracted most of the times when they are eating and thus fail to pick up important messages from their body. Remember, It can take time and practice to listen to your body and indulge in intuitive eating, but it will certainly prove very beneficial in curbing the habit of compulsive eating which puts unnecessary pressure on your body and negatively impacts your health and vitality.
Intuitive eating is also linked to better psychological health and maintenance of ideal body weight. Studies show that people who listen to their body are less likely to have weight issues or eating disorders.
2. Increase Fiber Intake
Eating whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed foods can help you feel full and satisfied compared to eating refined grains, sugars, and processed foods. Packaged processed ready to eat food should specifically be avoided. This group of food typically provides a rapid burst of energy followed by a drop in energy that can lead to cravings.
Fiber moves slowly through the digestive tract, keeping you full for a longer period of time. Fiber-rich foods also help lower cholesterol and blood sugar while reducing the risks of diabetes and heart disease. Most importantly, they can also reduce the risk of binge eating.
3. Don’t Skip Meals to lose weight
Skipping meals is big factor that can promote binge eating. It can leave your body desperate for nutrition and increase the likelihood of overeating. It can leave you feeling very moody and anxious, affecting your ability to think clearly and stay productive in the day.
A regular eating pattern on the other hand has been shown to reduce the chances of binge eating later in the day. Breakfast especially is important. Don’t skip it as it jumpstarts your metabolism and provides you with the energy needed to function more energetically and actively during the day.
4. Longer gap between Meals is essential for good Health
To maintain metabolism, good health and vitality, keep a gap of over 5 hours between meals. if you keep eating through the day, the cells retain impurities for a longer period, which creates various health problems over a period of time. Even the excretory process from the intestines does not happen efficiently because the waste material will keep coming to the colon at different times instead of at once. If the colon is not clean, along with physical issues, it can also cause psychological disturbances such as unstable and restless mind.
If food is constantly being fed into our digestive system, a certain amount of energy is naturally being used towards it, so both our brain and body will not function at their best. Thus Yoga claims, the longer the gap ( ideally 7 to 8 hours) between meals, the more quickly you will recover from all health issues.
5. Be Grateful for the Food you eat
You must see to it that you eat your meals in a very positive state of mind. Your mood and energy at the time of eating are going to get transferred into your meal. So always ensure that your mind is filled with positivity and gratitude for the food. You can chant mantras or offer a prayer of thanks before you start eating. We cannot fully control the impurities that may have entered the food while it was being prepared, but we can certainly cleanse our minds and energize our bodies by charging the food with positivity.
The food you eat gives you energy to think, function and to carry out all your tasks. So thank the universe for giving you this food. Smile and start to eat the food. Not only will you eat more mindfully, you will also observe you are more satisfied and energetic after your meal.
