Overcome Fear and Social anxiety

Do you get uncomfortable around people? Do even the most casual social interactions often leave you tensed, trembling, dizzy and uneasy? Do you find it difficult to mingle with or interact with your colleagues? Do you find it stressful to be yourself in public places or even have a relaxing evening with friends without bothering about how you are being perceived or judged? If this is something you often experience, then it could be termed as “Social Anxiety.”

Being around people may be discomforting because you may be afraid of criticism or rejection. You find it hard to engage or connect with others because you fear social awkwardness and embarrassments. The feeling of not being good enough may often dominate your mind. Social anxiety can affect our day to day life by making it difficult to engage in even fun activities and developing strong bonds with others.

Here are a few things we can do to overcome this problem and lead a more happy, confident and positive life-

1. Encourage Yourself

You might not be a very confident public speaker, but there are a lot of things in your life to be proud of. Understand and remind yourself, that you have your own strengths, skills and abilities. Don’t compare yourself with others and feel bad about not being what they are or not having what they have. We all have our own unique journey, goals, ways and methods.

Keep the attitude that you have to be the best version of yourself and that every day you are being given an opportunity to improve yourself and work towards your dreams. A new day has been given for you to rise and shine not fear and fall. Build on every day small achievements. Notice and acknowledge the good that you are doing and you will feel better about yourself. Your confidence will grow and you will be more comfortable around people.

2. Get out there and face your fears

If you suffer from social anxiety, you might just feel like you are stuck, suffocated or out of place most of the time. What is the best way to overcome it? Take some action. Face your fears. As the famous saying goes, “ Avoid it and it will chase you, Face it and it will dissolve.”

Start accepting some invitations from some known people to go places and do things involving a small group of people to begin with. While you are around others, try to strike some small conversations. Keep taking few deep breaths to ease your nervousness. Keep a smile on your face as you interact with others and try to maintain good eye contact with others. This will help you feel more relaxed and you will find it easier to pull off conversations more comfortably.

3. Read a good Book

Books can be great transformational tools. Surround yourself with good books. Choose to read books that help you understand how to take better control of your mind and thoughts. Pick up a motivational book or a social anxiety book for self-help.

Read true stories about other Successful people who have been able to overcome similar problems and challenges that you are facing today. Educating yourself through books will widen your thinking, knowledge and perspective in life. It will also give you the insight or inspiration that you need to make necessary changes in your own life.

4. Make Health your Priority
Health is your greatest wealth. When we are healthy, we are able to have better control over our mind, thoughts and feelings. Do everything in your power to ensure that poor physical health is not contributing to your problems with anxiety. Drink plenty of Water to soothe your nerves. Exercise on a regular basis and eat a healthy, balanced diet.

Consider taking up walking or Jogging or practice Yoga on a regular basis. Exercise not only increases feelings of wellbeing and reduces anxiety but if done in the company of a friend, neighbour or loved one, it offers the chance to build up your social skills too. The key here is discipline and consistency with commitment and Wll

5. Laugh more

Sometimes we take life way too seriously than we should. We spend so much time worrying, fretting and fearing that we forget to laugh and have fun. This could the biggest reason why we suffer from social anxiety.

When was the last time you watched a funny movie that made you laugh out loud? When did you last engage in a fun activity that made you forget your problems and laugh joyfully like a child? Laughter has been proven to be a great therapeutic tool for healing the mind and body. It can help you relax your mind and muscles and to help you live more in present moment awareness.

From today, Commit to bring more laughter into your life. Not only you will become a more happy and positive person, you will also find to easier to converse and interact with others.
