Ignite your Passion through the Power of the 5 Senses

Ignite your Passion through the Power of your 5 Senses.

Sometimes you may go through a phase where you find yourself lazy, bored or uninspired to carry on with your life and pursue your goals. At such times it is important to reconnect with yourself, ignite your passion, rekindle your inner spark and get back your enthusiasm for life.Everything in life comes to us from our energy and vibration. What determines our vibration is how we are processing the world. Our sensory projections affect our physical, mental, and spiritual well being.

A practice that can greatly help us in doing this is to intentionally focus on each of our five senses – sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. The 5 senses play a big role in how we process and download information in our minds.Focus on them as you engage in different activities and tasks. Through Mindfulness awareness, the senses can give us positivity, releasing endorphins that make us experience more Joy and bliss in life.

Intentionally using our senses in conscious ways can help ignite our passion for everyday living. Let’s see how to do this-

1. Sight

Visual impact – This is about what you see. What you see as you look at the world can have a profound effect on your mental wellbeing. Whether it is looking at a beautiful painting or artwork or going outside and looking at the beauty of nature, sight can be very healing. Go for a walk in nature. Practice mindfulness and be aware and alert. When you are walking, ensure you are not looking at your phone or talking to someone. Purely focus on noticing the colours, patterns, shapes, and textures of the objects around you. Notice the trees, grass, mud, flowers, sky etc. Notice your feet and become aware of each step. Smile as you observe, notice and acknowledge everything you see. You will begin to feel that quiet sense of peace, clarity and power within you.

2. Sound

The vibrational energy of sound stimulates physical, emotional, and spiritual reactions.
Choose a quiet place. Sit comfortably, Take a few deep breaths, in and out. As you sit in silence, observe, What do you hear? Relax and listen intentionally to the sounds around you. Focus only on the sounds and not on your thoughts and emotions. Try to find if there are gaps between the sounds. Don’t judge the sounds. Simply notice and accept them as they come. If you feel distracted, take a couple of deep breaths and return to the practice.

We are all aware of the power of Mantras. Mantras are specific sounds to help you get to deeper levels of awareness. Chant a mantra like OM. Feel the vibrations travel from your mouth to every part of your body, including your environment. You will feel refreshed and rejuvenated in few minutes itself.

3. Smell

Smell is considered one of our most primitive senses which connects us directly to our emotions, and instincts. If we can consciously direct this sense of smell, it can leave us feel lighter and happier. Aromatherapy in Ayurveda is a powerful way to balance and heal
emotions. It is known to aid psychological and physical wellbeing.

Light a scented candle. Candles can be very relaxing and refreshing. Find a scent that is fresh and pleasant to you. You can also light Incense sticks. Apart from being commonly used in worship in ancient traditions, they are also beneficial when lighted in our rooms to alleviate our mood and calm the mind. They are known to benefit in relaxing the nerves, making us less anxious and thereby helping us feel more energetic and enthusiastic. Take few minutes to truly enjoy the smell, taking relaxing long breaths, in and out.

4. Taste

Along with air and water, Food is very important for our survival. The sense of taste can play a big role in our mood and vibration. Eat a mindful meal. This means to not allow yourself to be distracted while eating your food. Ensure all your attention on harnessing the power of your sense of taste. Keep television and mobile away. With each bite, you have the opportunity to enjoy, relish and saviour the taste of the food you are eating.

Ayurveda distinguishes different tastes – sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent. During the day, with each bite, notice the different tastes you are getting as you consciously chew your food. Also be grateful for the nourishment the food is providing your body. This will calm your mind and raise your vibration. Your body will be better able to absorb the nutrients from your Food.

5. Touch

Touch helps us feel connected to our body, people and surroundings. It is a great way to practice mindfulness to overcome negative thoughts and feelings. One way to use the power of touch to refresh your mind and body is to bring attention to the things that you are currently feeling, such as the texture of your clothing or the smooth surface of the table you are resting your hands on or even bottom of the sofa or chair on which you are sitting . Few seconds of this can successfully divert our minds and release stress and tension.

Another way to benefit from the sense of touch is a massage. Therapeutic touch helps release the healing chemicals that support sleep, improve circulation, and build immunity. Give yourself or ask someone to give you a head massage. Choose a warm soothing oil and start at the scalp or top of your head. Gently massage the head using small circular motions. Also try massaging the soles of your feet with a good oil or desi ghee. Foot Massage can be very beneficial in improving blood circulation, stimulating muscles, reducing tension and even easing pain or discomfort in the body.

In conclusion, Trusting our senses to connect us to our body, mind, and environment can open up new ways of thinking seeing, feeling, believing and experiencing (things and life in general).
