How to deal with Negative feedback and Criticism

Whether you have received a negative feedback from your boss at work or some criticism for something you did from a family member, criticism can be very hard to accept. It has the potential to bring a lot of discouragement and demotivation when it is not taken in the right spirit and attitude.

Everyone makes mistakes and there is always some room to improve, and do better. Most of us understand this but still accepting critical feedback in a positive way can be challenging. Learning to accept constructive feedback gracefully can strengthen your self esteem, enrich your relationships, and help you make necessary changes for greater success and results in your life.

Here are some simple things you can do to view negative feedback you have received in a new light and use it as a tool for self improvement and growth.

1. Don’t take it personally

A feedback even though negative is about your actions or your behavior. It is not about who you are as a person. People don’t reject us, they reject the presentation of our ideas and actions. Don’t let criticism lower your self confidence and make you feel that you are not good enough. Self-worth isn’t determined by the words someone uses for you. It comes from you, from the value and respect you give yourself. As long as you are making sincere efforts and are open to keep working to improve, there is no reason to feel low due to a negative feedback. Afterall, feedback is the one of the best ways one can learn how to do it better. Sometimes a feedback is all it takes to get to the right track towards our goals and dreams.

2. Reflect on what was said non judgmentally

It’s easy to get triggered and have an emotional reaction when you hear negative comments. If your immediate reaction is anger or defensiveness, start taking few deep breaths to remain calm and keep your feelings in check. Later, when you feel more in control of your emotions, go back to what was told to you. Don’t be quick to resist something simply because it may be coming from someone you don’t like or who may have been proved wrong in the past. Look at what was said not who said it.

Think about the points made.  Be honest and ask yourself if there could be any truth in it. Write down if you think anything could have been done differently by you or if things could actually work out better if you implement some of the suggestions given to you. Once you have your thoughts down on paper, try to implement it to ensure that they add more power to your work and results. Take this feedback you received as an opportunity to review your own thoughts, feelings and actions. If you do, chances are that you will keep growing and getting more and more success in everything you do.

3. Determine the true intent behind the Feedback.

This is an important point. If the feedback is genuine and meant for your good, then it will provide specific suggestions on how to improve, and comes from a place of clear good intentions, not from a space of ridiculing you or harming your reputation. You will know it when you reflect on the points that were made and the energy that the words and conversation carried.

If you feel there is no truth to what was said and that the person may be holding some prejudice against you, then try not to hold negative feelings against that person. Just bless the person mentally and remind yourself, no one has the power to stop the good that you deserve. You will not allow this experience to weigh you down. You will think positive and do your best in everything and the rest will be taken care by the universe.

4. Learn to Love Yourself

The World is a reflection of your own energy. It is reflection of your thoughts and most of it is about your thoughts and feelings held for Self. When you love respect and value yourself, you subconsciously send a message to others to treat you the same way. Self love allows you to be open and receptive to feedbacks given to you for your good. You don’t take things personally or allow them to lower your self worth. You operate from an inner drive to give your best to everything and everyone. On the other hand, if you keep doubting yourself and feel you are not good enough, not only will you make more mistakes and be unhappy with yourself and others, no matter what you do, people will always be critical of you and try to pull you down.

Self love invites into your energy more love, acceptance and appreciation from others. It will allow you to surround yourself with positive people who give you genuine feedback and support you to achieve your goals and live your best life. To develop more Self love, Start spending time in Silence daily to connect with yourself and repeat the healing words, I love and accept myself wholeheartedly.”
